Unsurprisingly, I feel that Kagami and Shinji are characters cut more or less from the same cloth and I dislike Shinji quite a bit. I feel he's a guy who's not being a hero, he's playing hero while Ren does all the heavy lifting and makes all the hard decisions.

Tendou...I'm a little uncertain on this, short of saying his path was the ten no michi, lol.
I always got a Buddhist vibe from Tendou. His perfection was spiritual-- he didn't get too worked up over worldly concerns, so he didn't sabotage himself with emotional outbursts or undue striving the way Kagami (and other characters) did. He focused on doing extraordinary things and they happened, just as a Buddha can effortlessly perform miracles.

Kagami was the only average person among them, and I think the point there was reaching the others through pure perseverance and hard work.
Yeah, Kagami's supposed to be the Krillin. (Or the Rock Lee for you younger kids.) I didn't feel the show depicted his need to work hard as innately virtuous, though. A Western audience-- well, Americans and Canadians (to a lesser extent)-- are likely to take it that way because our culture prizes the ability to do hard work as a sign of inner worthiness. I can't buy a show that'd make Tendou the main character saying that, though.

I think we saw Kagami struggle as a sign of his basic unworthiness-- so he finds some happiness when he becomes Gatack and accepts that he's never, ever going to be on Tendou's level but can still do some good anyway. That's a far more traditionally Japanese and Buddhist sort of character arc, as frustrating as it's going to be for people with more American and Christian values.

The show even supported this--calling the Zecters "gods" one episode.
Buddhism takes a dim view of gods-- specifically, they're inferior to Buddhas and generally should not be regarded as very important by humans. I think this puts certain things about Tendou into perspective.

Agreed that Drake basically "doesn't count." I'd say he's comic relief but he was kind of more pointless than that. The few themes he pursued were also pursued, more coherently, with other characters.

He is comic relief. Just like Ozawa's assitant or Oya-san from Kuuga. Except that he's a rider.

    I'm sorry if I'm going off-topic (albeit from the off-topicness ).
Is it just me, or does OOO's belt voice sound like Akira Kushida?

I've heard that a few times. It's certainly a similar voice. I think I'd need to see an official credit before I thought it was Akira Kushida, the voice has been processed enough that it seems possible it's just similar.

Here I thought we might finally have what's in the Candy Toy Medal Set AmiAmi has up for pre-order, but this looks to be something completely different.
