Truth. A couple series made this work for them IMO, like Deka and Bouken. Others used arc-based storytelling like Magi and Geki. And then the rest...gah. >_<

For god sake. I never said Toei was ditching it. I was suggesting we ditch it because It's plagued the last umpteen pages and I think it would be best if we discussed the pirate theme. Plus I'm getting annoyed with the desperate attempts to fit locations and characters into continuity with each other.

Some of the suggestions I've seen here have been the most nooby fanfic shit I've seen in years.

The pirate theme, is the anniversary theme. It's one rumor, not two. The Goukaiger are rumored to have the power to transform into older rangers. Until we hear otherwise, both themes are fair game to discuss.


One Piece and this old European cartoon called Vike the Viking. I'd expect more light-hearted pseudo-comedic writing. The real question is if the characters will each have a good hook and if there'll be some sort of plot to carry the episodic action forward.

IMO, a lack of strong characters and arc-based plot structure has dragged down modern Super Sentai much moreso than the comedy or anime-like elements.



That's interesting. I have to admit, I've wanted to see a female Violet ranger for quite some time. This would give us the basic girly girl / serious girl personality split we get most of the time in Super Sentai, but eh, no need to reinvent the wheel every year.

Along those lines, for sure- The romantic idea of pirates, not the reality. Interestingly enough, Red is supposed to be in the make of Jake Sparrow, which is a character that plays with that duality.

I can definitely agree with that about the plot. The problem is, an arc-based sentai every year, would tend to get old. Shinkenger and Goseiger are sort of an amalgamtion of the episodic storyline and the arc storyline. It's sort of a toss up.

Inoue has been on several Rider shows post-Agito. Was Hirose not interested?

What exactly did he say was distasteful about toku nowadays?

It was around '02 when Hirose made these comments, so I got the impression he didn't care for the direction Rider took with Kuuga or Agito, either. (I think he's said in interviews that he did Agito as a favor to Nagaishi and Inoue; I have a theory that Kino was written for him and he turned it down, and just took that smaller role to make up for it. That would explain why he didn't do other Rider stuff for Inoue or Nagaishi until he put acting on hold.) I don't think he gets into particulars, so as not to seem too rude, but I remember him saying something like "the shows are just too different now," and that he had no interest in doing shows like them. And since '05 or so, he's put acting "on hold" to run a talent agency. (I'm a little disappointed in him that the focus of the agency seems to be cheesecake idol stuff, though. Doesn't Japan have enough of that?)

And this was in '02! Toku's fallen so much further since then. But if they could do a cool, good, action-oriented show that was a throwback, I could picture him being talked doing at least a guest-spot. Or at least voice a monster for the movie or something, as disappointing as that would be.

Yeah, totally digging the pirate idea. I hope there'll be multiple villain as in boukenger. i'm quite happy with this decade style idea but I can't say for sure. I was once disappointed.

Possibly even more interesting- Tezuka Masaaki supervising, and Urasawa Yoshio writing it!

Tezuka's worked on many a Godzilla flick, in different roles. And Urasawa Yoshio gave us bits of Digimon Adventure, Digmon Adventure 02, Digimon Tamers, as well as being a writer on Carranger, Abaranger and Justiriser eps.

A director experienced in giant/water battles, and a writer who is apt at writing comedy bits with dark undertones. I'm praying for this to be true.

If this turns out to be a series with weekly crossovers, I don't see why the mechas wouldn't be included. If they're going to show an old warrior in action, why not his arsenal?

They still should have most of the robot suits too (unlike the monster suits), so that shouldn't be a problem.

You know I have been looking up this Tezuka Masaaki and a lot of his efforts seem to include aerial set pieces. I mean of the kaiju films he has done most have contained Mothra or another flying monster, plus his most recent effort have been about a JSDF search and rescue team. Moving on I think we can possibly expect some massive battle scenes though, just based on what have been able to find on Samurai Commando Mission 1549.

As for Urasawa Yoshio being involved seems interesting, and honestly I have no idea what to expect this but certainly look forward to finding how it all works out.
