i've got a thing for bassists... and mukai.....and ........ yeah he just made my day :D

Well, I'm a bassist, but I don't think I'm your type. :loltongue:

Most QCers can't get things right. One good QCer is more than enough. Too many QCers will change the meaning of the script. Just get one to correct what needs to be corrected and be done with it well. It's just that most want some involvement, but it's best to let the guys who can do it right do it.

The problem is, sometimes the translation makes little enough sense to a native speaker of English that unless the QCer also speaks the original language, it's almost impossible not to change the meaning. This is also why I usually prefer making a list of notes for the translator and editor to plug in rather than changing things directly.

What do you think a QCer does? :eyebrow:

Makes sure it makes sense in English. Seriously, does every post you make toward me need to sound derogatory?

It just looks that way to you. I'm being honest here.

I want to know more of how you think QCing should work.

Should it be that the QCer changes the language that's in front of him or her to reflect his or her views, or should it be that the QCer looks for a way to convey the meaning of what is said in the most concise and precise manner possible?

When I see a script that could use some changes, I see boundaries. These boundaries cannot be crossed to better serve someone's purpose of making things look more complicated in order to make himself or herself look knowledgeable. I've seen it done many times, but the purpose of translation, and the purpose of QCing is to pass on the true meaning as well as possible to a viewer.

I hope that doesn't look derogatory.

If you'd said that the first time, we wouldn't be having this conversation. I'm guessing that you speak Japanese. That's great for you, but since I don't, I have to work with the translation that I'm given, and attempt to phrase it in such a way that makes the most sense in English without changing the meaning of the original sentence. Like I said, this is why I prefer making notes instead of changing the .ass file directly, so that I can put multiple options for the editor or translator to choose from in order to stay closest to the meaning presented in the original language. It's especially tricky with verb tenses and such, or places where the word doesn't really have a direct translation, and thus we need to come up with something in English that is close. It's not exactly an exact science.

And no, I don't "change things to make myself look more knowledgeable" when doing QC. That would be stupid, since I don't speak Japanese. It would end up doing the complete opposite.

I never claimed that you do change things. I'm saying that most do. An English speaker who follows the rules can be the perfect QCer in English. I'm still in the process of learning Japanese, but my English has been worked well enough to do almost anything. A QCer is for the final language. The translator is for converting the original language to the final language.

So for intro to theatre had to read a short story called And the souls shall dance. And guess what, it was Japanese :D
Great read btw, still confused at the ending, so I may re-read it.

If QC has to do that then the editor did a sucky job ;)

Why does everyone seem to think QC should be more than just an overall check of the file to see if it's good for release xD?

Editors and QCers are overlapping roles more now than before. You could say that QC should just be someone watching the video and then letting someone know to change an error, but that's not efficient. Editors should make sure that the timings and typesetting are both correct and that there's nothing else that would prevent someone from understanding or enjoying the sub if it's within their powers. That usually excludes QC from doing anything. Now QC takes a larger role, or the names and roles sometimes overlap.

not everyone has editors AND QC'ers... some people only have QC'ers who do the work of an editor as well :P

Well, yeah. QC not being able to fix something himself isn't very efficient. But that doesn't mean there should be a lot of errors left when the file goes into QC. Just stuff the timer/editor and typesetter might have missed.

What does editing have to do with timing/typesetting? o_0 Editors need to fix typos/grammar and make sure there's no engrish left.

I just think it's easier (mostly just for recruiting new staff I guess) to call stuff what it is. If your QCer is editing then just call him the editor xD?

Yeah. There's so much change happening. Efficiency is increasing by changing some things. If QC is done the traditional way, it takes longer and if there's a mistake, then that's a major problem because that means nobody caught it after all the people went through the script.

Editing a script is also going through and fixing times in case they should be reduced or extended. It doesn't happen much, but it helps to be able to do two things or more at once when it's not a problem.

Maybe one day, the QCer will be phased from existence and his role will become that of a full Editor. We'll see.

Silly Drazic, the Editor fixes timing errors too. =p But generally it has nothing to do with the typesetting, the typesetter and the qcers should check that. I've edited & qced, I find editing is more work and that there is a difference.

Some Editors can fix typesetting, but yes, it's usually sent back to the typesetter.

When I was first reading this, I thought:

Silly Drazic, Trix are for kids.

Well, sure. If you're working in the script as an editor anyway then it's not too much trouble to fix it if you can. But generally I think it should be the timer's responsibility to make sure the timing is right. I've never seen an editor even ask if they have to fix the timing as well lol.

I guess you're used to pre-translation timing where the initial timing probably is a lot worse. (I've never really done any myself but seems harder to me xD).

Editor's pretty much the only job where it doesn't really matter if the person knows some timing basics or not so no. It doesn't seem very useful to require them to fix the timing as well to me.

But then again, there's no standard or something for this. I think it's all rather silly but if you want to mix up QC, editing and timing, whatever ;P Just don't do it in my group lol.

Ooooooooh nerefir that sucks.. I hit my arm on someone's mirror once and thought I broke the mirror off at first because when I hit it, it went inward toward their door, but they weren't there to see me do it, so I just fixed it back and kept going. lol

One time I fell down and bruised the side of my knee, it took almost a month to heal. This bruise is about as slow as that one, but I didn't get ice on this one as quickly, so I'll cross my fingers it heals faster.
